The Forest of Dean is a geographical, historical, and cultural region in western Gloucestershire, England, known for its woodlands and situated on the border with Monmouthshire and South Wales, bounded by the River Wye, Herefordshire, the River Severn, and the City of Gloucester.
it is famous for its timber as well as its rich mineral resources of iron ore, sandstone and coal. While the industrial nature of the Forest was at its height during the late 19th and early 20th Century, quarrying of stone and timber production are still important aspects of the local economy today. Newent is just one of the towns in the Forest of Dean and has close links with all the villages, towns, forest and country side. The forest has been a Royal forest since the Norman Conquest.
Covering a triangular area of 200+ square miles it is administrated by the local goverment district of Gloucestershire, the Forest of Dean discrict council. The current population is approximately 85000-90000.
